The nose immediately reminds me of a very rich stewed fruits compote of apples and pears with a liberal amount of sugar and some apricots and peaches thrown into the mix. It is on the sweet side.

The nose opens with a mixture of typical Bowmore medium-strength peat smoke, vanilla, cooling peppermint (from the noticeable alcohol), lemon, a hint of white pepper, and, of course, the flowery violet note found in most modern Bowmores. Continue reading “Tasting: Bowmore 13y 2001 by Cadenhead’s”

The nose is a bit strong on the alcohol at first with a delicate and shy aroma lurking underneath. Not too active a cask I guess. After the initial alcoholic note passes I get light fruit notes.

The nose tells the story of a pretty young, heavily peated dram: The dominating peat smoke (mainland style, campfire-ish) works reasonably well at masking the young character of the malt. Continue reading “Tasting: Glenglassaugh Torfa”

Tasting notes:

deep red copper
The nose opens on a dark note with kirsch, dry sherry (maybe Fino? I’m not the biggest expert on Sherry, sorry…), plum schnapps, european oak spices (old wardrobe with moth balls?), some dried toffee and caramel (not the sweetness, just the aroma), cocoa powder, instant coffee and a hint of eucalyptus.

Tasting: Springbank 1996 17y Single Cask for Potstill Vienna

Alcohol: 56%
Unchillfiltered, natural colour

Tasting notes:
Colour:
red gold
The nose immediately reminds me of the 2015 Springbank 17 sherry wood I just tasted yesterday. It’s not the same, but the common denominator is the quite noticeable and similar wood influence on top of the signature Springbank saltiness. The wood influence, even though it is a refill cask, is dominating, making it hard to pick out the Springbank peat smoke. Limitation: –
Casks: American Oak
Alcohol: 46%

Tasting notes:
Colour:
reddish gold
The nose is typical unpeated Bruichladdich – I like to call it the gentle side of Islay. Some very good and active ex-bourbon casks went into this batch and if it didn’t say “american-oak-matured” on the label I’d say there’s some ex-sherry casks in the mix as well. And yes, I’m fully aware they make sherry casks out of American oak as well. Vanilla pudding, toffee and fudge. Creamy and well-rounded but maybe a wee bit shy, like a 10-year-old lady (terrible pun, I know). Continue reading “Tasting: Bruichladdich The Laddie Ten”
