Who am I and why am I so madly in love with whisky?
My name is Klaus Doblmann, born and raised in Austria where I have lived ever since I was born. I’m of mid-1980s vintage (making me old enough for birthyear bottlings to get more and more expensive…) and fell in love with whisky, mainly Scottish single malts, not too long after my 18th birthday, over 10 years ago. Ever since my first dram of single malt – which was an 8yo, now really rare, official bottling of Glen Ord for the curious minds – I was keen to learn more and more about the “aqua vitae”, the “water of life”, tasting many different expressions in the course of a decade. For a few years now I’m also looking more and more into other categories of malts – American, Indian, Japanese etc. but Scottish malts are where my heart lies. My first trip to Scotland together with one of my brothers in 2013 marked a new cornerstone in my development as a whisky lover and in early 2014 I felt ready to start my own whisky blog, sharing my love and passion for these aged, brown spirits with the world.
What defines me as a whisky drinker? First, let me tell you what I’m not. I am not a whisky collector. I don’t buy expensive old bottles like Brora or Port Ellen or newer overly-hyped and over-branded “collector releases” which will never be drunk but exist solely to be sold on later at higher prices. Whisky is there to be drunk and while I do have a well-sized “collection” (or, more fittingly, accumulation) all of my bottles are there to be opened at some point in the future.
Why Whisky? Well, I am a big believer in the “quality, not quantity” approach. I never drink alcohol to get drunk, I like to stay in control of myself. A good dram or two of whisky, even though small in volume, goes a long way. It constantly evolves and develops in the glass, the different flavors and tastes available are absolutely astonishing. Every cask is different, every batch is different and there are lots and lots of things to discover.
As far as my background is concerned I have acquired a master’s degree in media and communications and am working in the (B2B!) marketing department (a mix of graphics design / web content management / photography and videography) of a local (yet globally active and renowned) company.
In case you were wondering why I’m blogging in English: Because a) it helps me reach a broader, international audience and b) It helps me stay fluent and in training.
