Red Gold
The nose exhibits the same base character like the official 12-year-old Hazelburn I just tasted prior to this, but with a lot more cask influence. A light and fragrant base with notes of citrus, orange juice, orange oil, grapefruit, pepper, ginger and a dash of brine. Continue reading “Tasting: Hazelburn 2002-2014 12y by Cadenhead’s”

The nose is fresh, citrussy, delicate, just as you would expect from a triple distillation, a very rare production process these days. It is, however, only the distillate being light, you can tell it was matured in quality casks adding a nice layer of depth.

Tasting notes:
Colour:
The usual artificial amber from too much E150(a).
On the nose it is smoky, all right. That’s the first impression I get. What kind of smoke? I’m guessing Islay by the hints of phenols and iodine. However before I really get to nose it, the smoke has already disappeared into the background, mingling with sweeter notes lying underneath. Continue reading “Tasting: Wemyss Peat Chimney 12y”

For a sherry cask matured whiskey (according to the label) the colour is relatively light (a dark red-gold). The nose is initially met with a big amount of alcohol – no wonder, looking at the bottling strength. Continue reading “Tasting: Redbreast 12 Cask Strength”

Tasting notes:
The colour is a reddish copper – I bought this in Germany so the addition of colourant should be noted (not to be found). The nose is fruity fresh (think summer fruit basket), I get fresh vanilla, lemon rind, lemon juice, orange oil, banana, fresh figs, hints of tropical fruits like mango and a slight maltiness.
