Tasting notes:
Colour: light gold. On the nose I initially get a mix of light vanilla-honey sweetness mixed with herbs. Some plums, figs, toffee, milk chocolate and hints of malt make for a very fruity-sweet but not overly complex initial impression. The palate however doesn’t hold up the nose’s promise. The first sip is on the one hand a bit alcoholic yet on the other very dilute – thanks to the 40% bottling strength, I guess. The second and third sips reveal a mixture of bittersweet notes, maybe some hints of nuts and a slight metallic youthfulness – I honestly can’t detect any flavours standing out in this mix. The finish is slightly malty-sweet and short to medium-long.
Verdict:
I’m a bit disappointed by the 10-year-old Edradour, to be honest. I have a soft spot for Edradour and quite like a few of the older and especially cask-strength single-cask offerings, but this one is not one of my must-haves. It is a decent entry-level dram with a nice nose and might just fit the bill for introducing newcomers to the pleasures of single malt whisky, or might just suit those not looking for overwhelming aromas but for me it is lacking a bit of complexity in palate and finish. A bit on the expensive side too for casual easy-sipping.
